Five early mistakes in tower defence games

April 21, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

Most tower defence losses I see, including my own, happen in the first few waves when nothing feels threatening. The trap is spending everything early on cheap towers instead of setting up for the waves that actually matter.

Mistake one: covering every lane equally. Concentrate your defence where enemies funnel. Mistake two: upgrading too wide. A few strong towers usually beat many weak ones. Mistake three: ignoring the wave preview, if the game gives you one.

Mistake four is panic-selling towers mid-wave, which almost always makes things worse. Mistake five is forgetting about range. A slightly worse tower placed where it hits a long stretch of path often outperforms a stronger one tucked in a corner.

None of this is complicated, but breaking the habits takes a few runs. Play one map slowly and think about placement, and it starts to become automatic.
